Trade Policy
Machine tools items are classified under HS code 8456 to 8468. All the items under these codes are freely importable.

Industry Policy
Machine tools manufacturers are exempt from obtaining an industrial licence to manufacture. However, they are required to file an Industrial Entrepreneur Memoranda (IEM) in Part 'A' (as per prescribed format) with the Secretariat of Industrial Assistance (SIA), Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India, and obtain an acknowledgement. No further approval is required. Immediately after commencement of commercial production, Part B of the IEM has to be filled in. Manufacturers are free to select the location of the project.

Specific items under machine tools are reserved for production by the small scale industry. A small scale unit is not permitted more than 24 per cent equity in its paid up capital from any industrial undertaking either foreign or domestic.

Tariff-non-tariff Policy
All the machine tools items attract a total import duty of 50.8 per cent. This includes a basic duty of 25 per cent, additional duty of 16 per cent and special additional duty of four per cent. There is one item whose code is 84569100 has no import duty.
