Trade Policy
Electronic goods and computer hardware and software are classified under HS code 8505 and 8515 to 8545. Imports of most items are free. There are few items which require import licences.

Industry Policy
Industrial undertakings manufacturing electronic goods and computer hardware are exempt from obtaining an industrial licence to manufacture. The declicensed undertakings, however, are required to file an Industrial Entrepreneur Memoranda (IEM) with the Secretariat of Industrial Assistance (SIA). No further approval is required. There are no restrictions regarding the location of the manufacturing unit.

Tariff-non-tariff Policy
Import duty for electronic goods and computer hardware is either 56.83 per cent or 50.8 per cent or 38.74 per cent or 32.7 per cent. The difference in the duty is mainly because of variation in basic custom duties which is 30 per cent, 25 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Other duties such as additional duty and special additional duty are same at 16 per cent and four per cent respectively. There are very few items with no duty at all. Additional duty for colour TVs ranges from Rs.1500 per set to Rs.33,000 per set depending upon the size of the screen.
